Blepharoplasty
Common complaints of patients seeking cosmetic eyelid surgery (also called Blepharoplasty) include excessive or wrinkled skin of the eyelids, puffy "bags" of the lower eyelids, and sometimes decreased peripheral vision. Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both males and females, and can have a very dramatic effect in restoring a more youthful, rested appearance. When loose folds, sagging skin and bagginess are reduced, the eyes appear more naturally alert and brighter. It can be performed on either the upper or lower lids or both

Asian Eyelids
If your concern is a narrow eye aperture due to a single Asian eyelid, we offer an Asian eyelid procedure (Asian Blepharoplasty) at Pratt Plastic Surgery. This procedure does not erase the beautiful Asian look, but enhances the Asian eyelid by leading to a more widely opened eye.
What other procedures will complement Blepharoplasty?
While eyelid surgery can create a more youthful, less tired appearance, improvement of fine lines in the skin typically requires skin resurfacing. Softening of crow's feet will usually require Botox injections. Sagging brows and deep horizontal lines of the forehead may necessitate an endoscopic brow lift. Many patients seeking rejuvenation of their lower eyelids actually have significant drooping of the cheek tissues contributing to the lower eyelid “bags”. In that case, Dr. Pratt may add a cheek lift procedure in order to fully rejuvenate the midface.
Good candidates
The best candidates for blepharoplasty surgery are physically and emotionally healthy non-smokers who have excess skin and fat or “bags” affecting their eyelids. Patients with glaucoma, diabetes, dry eyes, high blood pressure, thyroid or heart problems should discuss these issues with Dr. Pratt, so that he can evaluate whether you are still an acceptable candidate.
What can I expect during my consultation?
Once you and Dr. Pratt have had a chance to talk about what you are hoping to achieve with surgery, he will examine the problem areas which you hope to improve. Dr. Pratt will assess the skin, muscles, and fat tissues of your eyelids. He will also check your brows and cheeks for “ptosis” (sagging), which may require correction as well. During your consultation with Dr. Pratt, you will find out what kinds of costs are involved and will be given a written price quote. Be sure to discuss your expectations openly and ask as many questions as you need to. This is your chance to discuss your goals and expectations with Dr. Pratt.
What does preparation for my Blepharoplasty entail?
Prior to your surgery, you will attend your preoperative appointment with Dr. Pratt, at least two weeks prior to your surgery date. At that time, our staff will review your consent forms with you, answer any questions you might have, and the risks and benefits of surgery will be thoroughly reviewed. You will be given your prescriptions to be filled prior to your surgery. You will be given a list of medications and supplements to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be instructed to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. You should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.
What happens on the day of surgery?
Your eyelid surgery will be performed as an outpatient in our state of the art office-based facility in Kirkland under local anesthesia, with or without mild sedation. You will arrive approximately one hour prior to surgery. At Pratt Plastic Surgicenter, our OR staff will make you comfortable and acquaint you with our preop area. Your own personal locker will be assigned to you. You will be given a luxurious robe to wear and Dr. Pratt will answer any last minute questions and make the preoperative markings on your face to help guide him during the procedure. The procedure takes from one and a half to two hours depending upon the extent of the condition and whether work is being done on both the upper and lower eyelids.
How Is the procedure performed?
For the upper eyelids, an incision is made along the natural fold of the eyelid, and excess skin and fat is removed. For the lower lids, the incision may be made right below the lower lash line and excess skin, fat and muscle removed. Dr. Pratt routinely tightens the lower eyelid muscle in order to prevent the drooping of the eyelid following surgery, thus helping to avoid an “operated look”.
What is the recovery period like?
You will be sent home with a special ointment on your incisions. All of the sutures are dissolvable, and you may begin gently washing your face and shampooing your hair four days following surgery. Elevation of your head at all times is important in resolving the swelling and preventing any bleeding and minimizing bruising. You will be provided a full set of step by step instructions explaining what to do and not do after surgery. Complete healing will take months, but as each day passes, a more beautiful, younger appearing you will be revealed. Most patients will be back to work and resuming most normal activities in seven to ten days following surgery. The stitches used are all self-dissolving. Incisions usually heal quite inconspicuously.
