What is Body Contouring?
Body contouring is the final phase of your weight loss journey. It gives you a smoother, more pleasing body contour by removing excess skin and tissue.
If you have lost a large amount of weight, congratulations! Typically after weight loss, the skin loses much of its elasticity making it difficult to shrink down to the new body contours. If you have loose, hanging skin, droopy breasts, or sagging facial and neck tissues, you may be a candidate for body contouring surgery.
Good candidates for Body Contouring
Overall, you are a good candidate for body contouring if you are:
- An adult man or woman of any age whose weight is stable
- A healthy person with no medical conditions to impair healing or increase the common risks of body contouring surgery
- A non-smoker
- A positive person with realistic expectations about your surgery’s outcome
- An individual committed to a healthy lifestyle that includes adequate nutrition and regular exercise
Will my Body Contouring surgery leave scars?
Yes, because any time the skin is incised, a scar results. The placement of the scars for a body contouring surgery will vary with the technique used in your particular case. Dr. Pratt will discuss which technique will suit you best and may advise you to participate in our Scar Reduction Program, depending on your skin type and history of scarring.

- Discuss your goals and concerns regarding the procedures
Preparing for Post-Bariatric Body Contouring surgery
Prior to your surgery date, you will attend a preoperative appointment with Dr. Pratt, who will again describe the liposuction procedure in detail, explain the risks and limitations, and verify that you understand all aspects of the treatment. Dr. Pratt and his staff will give you specific information regarding:
- Any diagnostic testing that will be needed prior to your surgery
- Prescriptions for medications
- Preoperative and postoperative care
- Consent forms
- A list of supplements and medicines to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery including fish oil, Vitamins A and E, Motrin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Nuprin and Aspirin to name a few. All of these substances thin the blood and increase the risk of increased bleeding and bruising.
- If you are a smoker, you will be encouraged to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. If possible you should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.
Your body contouring surgery will be performed under general anesthesia in Dr. Pratt’s office-based surgical facility or in a hospital outpatient surgicenter. If multiple procedures are performed, an overnight hospital stay may be required. Prior to closure of the incisions, Dr. Pratt makes sure to inject a long acting numbing medicine in order to add to your postoperative comfort. Dr. Pratt and his staff will be fully attentive to your postoperative comfort and safety. As with other cosmetic surgery procedures, you will continue to heal over time, and will be fully healed in about one year.
Will the results of Body Contouring last?
The results can be seen almost immediately, and even more clearly as the swelling subsides. The results are typically long lasting, as long as you maintain a stable weight and good fitness levels. Even as you age and lose some firmness naturally, the results of your body contouring will remain largely intact.
