Botox Facial Treatment in Seattle

Also serving Bellevue, Kirkland, & Everett

Vertical wrinkles or “frown lines” in the middle of the brow that occur as a result of the prolonged action of the frown muscles can be effectively treated with a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection. By weakening the “frown muscles” or other overactive muscles of the face, Botox® Cosmetic can leave the face appearing more restful and relaxed, as well as soften many of the wrinkles caused by the repeated action of these muscles. “Dynamic wrinkles” or wrinkles that worsen when the underlying muscle contracts include the “crow’s feet” at the corner of the eye and those around the lips when we pucker. Patients with these “dynamic wrinkles” are potential candidates for treatment with Botox® Cosmetic. What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the trademark for a purified medicinal form of botulinum toxin, a protein extracted from the clostridium botulinum bacteria. Injections of this medicine have been used for more than a decade in children and adults to improve the problem of muscle spasm of the facial muscles. This toxin has also been useful in correcting double vision due to eye muscle imbalance. More recently, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used by plastic surgeons for improving a patient’s appearance. Injection of minute amounts of the BOTOX® Cosmetic weakens the small muscles beneath the skin, and either partially or entirely eliminates vertical mid-brow frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, “crow’s feet”, other unwanted expression lines, and “turkey gobbler” neck bands.

How is BOTOX® Cosmetic administered?

Minute amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic are injected into the offending muscle(s) with a very fine needle. The BOTOX® Cosmetic acts on the muscle, preventing the muscle from contracting, thus allowing the overlying skin to relax. Wrinkles gradually soften and may eventually disappear.

Who should administer my Botox® treatments?

At Pratt Plastic Surgery, all Botox® injections are administered by Seattle cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Pratt himself. It is important for you to understand that many types of authorized healthcare professionals can legally administer Botox® in the state of Washington, including nurses, medical assistants, physician assistants (PA), nurse practitioners as well as any physician, no matter what their background, training, knowledge of facial anatomy or experience. You can rest assured that Dr. Pratt has over 12 years of experience treating Botox® Seattle, Bellevue and Tacoma area patients and thorough knowledge of the anatomy of the face and neck. It is important to choose your BOTOX® professional very carefully so that you receive the best results possible with the least amount of risk.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy painful?

When the BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the muscle with a fine needle, there is often a stinging sensation, which lasts a few seconds. Once the injection is complete, there is usually no residual discomfort.

What is the BOTOX® Cost Saving Maintenance Program?

Patients who wish to continue receiving their Botox treatments on a regular basis can take advantage of this cost saving program. With prepayment of one year worth of Botox treatments, you will buy three and get the fourth for free.

Does BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy work for everyone?

The majority of persons who are candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy will see disappearance or at least significant improvement of the unwanted expression lines and wrinkles. Patients with mild to moderate neck muscle banding will also note significant improvement.

How many treatments will I need?

The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic may be prolonged. In certain cases, multiple treatments will lead to permanent muscle relaxation or atrophy, and no further treatments will be necessary.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?

Yes, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used for more than twenty years with an excellent safety record.

The most common side effects experienced with BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy are minor and include the following:

Bruising:Ecchymosis (bruising) is the most common side effect to occur. Overall, bruising occurs in less than twenty percent of patients. Avoiding aspirin or aspirin-like products for two weeks prior to the injection can minimize the incidence of post injection bruising.

Neck Discomfort:Mild, transient neck discomfort occurs in less than ten percent of patients following BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy. This discomfort usually lasts for two to five days.

Headache:A short-lived headache occasionally occurs following BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy. Interestingly however, many patients who have experienced frontal “tension headaches” prior to treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic have had significant improvement of their headache symptoms following their injection.

Weakness of Adjacent Muscles:Rarely, spread of the BOTOX® Cosmetic injection to an adjacent muscle group can cause unwanted weakness of these muscles, however this is quite unlikely when the injection is performed by an experienced physician. Depending on the muscles affected, the effect could be asymmetry, droopiness of the eyebrow and/or eyelid, elevation of the brow, relative skin redundancy, or increased bulging of the lower eyelid fat deposits. Although extremely rare, BOTOX® Cosmetic injection can potentially cause temporary double vision. By keeping one’s head up, icing the injection site, and avoiding massaging or manipulating the injected area following the injection, the incidence of these side effects can be minimized

Allergic Reactions:Very rarely a patient may have an allergic reaction to BOTOX® Cosmetic This reaction would be treated similarly to any other allergic reaction.

Who should not be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic injection therapy?

Patients who are taking Aminoglycoside antibiotics, are pregnant or lactating should avoid treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic Patients with neuromuscular disease such as multiple sclerosis should obtain a second opinion from their neurologist prior to proceeding with a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection. Finally, patients with known allergies to BOTOX® Cosmetic or any of its constituents such as albumin should avoid injections with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Patients who are unable to accept a reduction or elimination in their ability to express themselves through certain facial expressions (i.e. frowning) should not undergo this procedure.

Are there other types of procedures to treat unwanted expression lines, wrinkles, and neck bands?

The options available for treating wrinkles include skin resurfacing with a laser, dermabrasion, or chemical peel. Additionally, wrinkles can be “filled” with soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Perlane, Radiesse, or Restylane, or fat injections. Improvement of the frown lines and horizontal forehead lines can be obtained with an endoscopic brow lift and partial removal of the frown muscles. Traditional treatment of neck muscular bands may require a neck lift or face lift operation.

A treatment schedule

If you are happy with the results of your treatment, you can set up a regular treatment schedule to maintain your new, more relaxed look. If you decide you don’t like BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, you can discontinue the injections and, eventually, your frown lines will reappear.
