Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy) in Seattle

Also serving Bellevue, Kirkland, & Everett

Sagging breasts can result from the effects of pregnancy, nursing, the force of gravity, and occasionally can be a genetic trait that is noted shortly after puberty. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A breast lift (Mastopexy) procedure can help restore the breasts to a more youthful shape and “perkiness”, as well as reduce the size of enlarged areolae (dark skin around the nipple). A breast lift may be just the procedure to help restore your youthful contours, as well as your self-confidence!

Am I a good Seattle / Bellevue Breast Lift candidate?

While women with small breasts that are beginning to sag have the best results, a breast lift can be performed on virtually any size breast. However, patients with large breasts will often be interested in having breast tissue removed (breast reduction) at the same time as their breast lift. The best breast lift Seattle and Bellevue candidates include women who are non-smokers and in good physical and emotional health who suffer from saggy breasts with enlarged areolae.

Will my Breast Lift surgery leave scars?

The placement of the scars for a breast lift will vary with the technique used in your particular case. Dr. Pratt will discuss which technique will suit you best and may advise you to participate in our Scar Reduction Program, depending on your skin type and history of scarring.

Can I also have Breast Implants with a Breast Lift?

Yes, our Everett, Tacoma, Bellevue and Seattle breast augmentation patients often receive a breast lift in conjunction with breast implants in order to restore volume to the breasts and give more fullness, particularly in the upper portion of the breast. A patient who has had previous breast augmentation may also be a candidate for a breast lift.

In addition, Pratt Plastic Surgery now offers one of today’s best implants. The Ideal Implant has both the “perks” of silicone breast implants and the benefits of saline implants.

What types of Breast Lift surgeries are available?

As a leading Seattle breast lift specialist, Dr. Pratt will recommend a particular type of breast lift procedure depending on the shape of your breasts and how much they sag. A small amount of sagging or a tubular breast shape is corrected with a minor lift, called the peri-areola lift, which limits the scars to the nipple-areola complex only. Moderate sagging is corrected with the “lollipop” lift, leaving a vertical scar below the areola. Significant sagging requires a full pattern or “anchor” lift, removing excess skin from the breasts and leaving scars around the areola, below the areola and beneath the breast.

How much discomfort will I have?

Following breast lift surgery, patients experience varying amounts of discomfort. Much of the discomfort results from spasm of the chest muscles which are stretched during placement of the implant under the muscle. Prior to closure of the incisions, Dr. Pratt makes sure to inject a long acting numbing medicine into the chest and breast tissues in order to add to your postoperative comfort. Dr. Pratt will also prescribe both an oral pain medication and a strong muscle relaxant. Dr. Pratt may suggest a pain pump for patients having their implants placed beneath the muscle. Learn more about our PainBuster Program. Nausea and vomiting can contribute significantly to postoperative pain, thus Dr. Pratt will prescribe an anti-nausea “patch” prior to your surgery (Learn more about our No Nausea protocol.

Your initial consultation with Seattle Breast Lift specialist Dr. Pratt

During your initial consultation, the highly esteemed Tacoma plastic surgeon Dr. Pratt will evaluate your overall health and inquire about your treatment goals. In the presence of a female staff member, he will examine your breasts, assessing them with regard to shape, symmetry, size and the height of your areolae. He will take measurements that will help him determine the new position of the nipples and areolae. Dr. Pratt will discuss your options for treatment, explain the details of the procedure and recovery, and answer any questions you may have. He will speak to you at length about simultaneously adding breast implants if you wish to also increase your bust size. Finally, he will provide you with a price quote for the procedure. This is your opportunity to speak openly with Dr. Pratt about any questions or concerns you may have.

What does preparation for Breast Lift entail?

Prior to your surgery, you will attend your preoperative appointment with Dr. Pratt, at least two weeks prior to your surgery date. At that time, our staff will review your consent forms with you, answer any questions you might have, and the risks and benefits of surgery will be thoroughly reviewed. You will be given your prescriptions to be filled prior to your surgery. You will be given a list of medications and supplements to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be instructed to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. You should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.

How is a Breast Lift performed?

Seattle, Bellevue, Everett and Tacoma breast lift patients receive outpatient surgery in the main operating room of the Pratt Plastic Surgery Surgicenter in Kirkland, Washington, or a hospital outpatient surgicenter. The surgery is performed either under general anesthesia or “twilight anesthesia” (IV sedation). Breast lift surgery takes about three hours. You will then be wrapped in a gauze dressing and ace wraps. Recovery from anesthesia takes approximately one hour.

Recovery for Breast Lift Seattle / Bellevue patients

You will be discharged to home from our surgicenter in Kirkland, Washington when you are fully recovered. Light activity is encouraged for the first two weeks following surgery, but you may go back to regular non-strenuous activities within a few days. Heavy lifting or strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks. Full recovery will take six to eight weeks, at which time activities such as skiing, wakeboarding, and contact sports can be undertaken safely.
