Asian Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) in Seattle

Also serving Bellevue, Kirkland, & Everett

One of the most popular surgeries Dr. Pratt performs for Asian patients is the Asian rhinoplasty. Like Asian blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty surgery in the Asian patient is inherently quite different from rhinoplasty in the Caucasian. The “standard rhinoplasty” in the Caucasian patient usually consists of removing bone and trimming the nasal cartilages. In the Asian patient, the bridge of the nose usually needs to be built up, or “augmented,” and the base of the nose and nostrils often require narrowing. These facts are important for your rhinoplasty surgeon to understand in order to provide you with the natural-appearing results that you have always dreamed of.

What can I expect during my consultation?

During your confidential consultation, Dr. David Pratt, will examine your nose and will offer his expert opinion as to what changes will be needed to fulfill your wishes. It is helpful if you can bring in close-up pictures of people with noses that you like, since this helps Dr. Pratt understand exactly the look you are after.

What type of implant does Dr. Pratt use to augment the Asian nose?

Usually, a custom fit, solid silicone nasal bridge implant is used. These implants have an excellent safety record and a long history of successful use in Asian patients. They also have the advantage of not needing to take tissue from another part of the body.

What does preparation for my Asian Rhinoplasty entail?

Prior to your surgery, you will attend your preoperative appointment with Dr. Pratt, at least two weeks prior to your surgery date. At that time, our staff will review your consent forms with you, answer any questions you might have, and the risks and benefits of surgery will be thoroughly reviewed. You will be given your prescriptions to be filled prior to your surgery. You will be given a list of medications and supplements to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be encouraged to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. If possible, you should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.

What happens on the day of surgery?

Your rhinoplasty surgery will be performed as an outpatient in our state of art Ambulatory Surgery Center in Kirkland under general anesthesia. You will arrive approximately one hour prior to surgery. Our OR staff will make you comfortable and acquaint you with our preop area. Dr. Pratt will answer any last minute questions and make the preoperative markings on your nose to guide him during the procedure. The procedure takes approximately two hours, and recovery time is usually between one and two weeks.

What will the scars be like?

All of the incisions will be hidden inside your nose so there will be no visible scars.

What is the recovery period like?

You will be sent home with a special nasal splint which Dr. Pratt will remove at your one week follow-up appointment. All of the sutures are dissolvable. You will need to avoid getting your splint wet or blowing your nose for the first week following surgery. Elevation of your head at all times is important in resolving the swelling and preventing any bleeding and minimizing bruising. You will be provided a full set of step by step instructions regarding what to do and not do after surgery. Swelling and bruising will begin to go away after two or three days. Complete healing will take approximately a year, but as each day passes, a more beautiful you will be revealed. Most patients will be back to work and resuming most normal activities in five to seven days following surgery.
